Good acting especially by Toby Jones, but the overall effect is that too much is squeezed into too little time. The best productions of Dickens are those which give time to explore the fascinating characters he has created. We need at least two and a half hours to really appreciate the characters and the plot. Dombey and Son(BBC production in the eighties) was about 4 hours and was much more successful as was the recent BBC production of Little Dorrit(over 4 hours again.)

An OK watch but it really isn't in the same class as the Ustinov effort. Almost unbelievably,we watched both versions on the same evening.The latter one is simply better executed than the former.
