In a word? Sound.
The dark and mysterious opening provides a great stage for the film, a journey of discovery as we watch Kate, the title ballet dance, battle her personal demons in overcoming an 'accident' that we don't know anything about some years previous that has left her mute and scarred for the rest of her life. A rough and tumble type, Danny, (played by the fantastic Samuel Jonathan) a young welsh lad, ends up realising he can make a penny or two from Kate's dance skills and seeks her out after meeting her in an online chat room. Ulterior motives? You betcha. Plain sailing? Definitely not.
There's some cracking scenes that turn the spotlight in a comic but poignant way on how we use modern technology today to communicate, especially where emotions and personal data are concerned. There's a strong soundtrack and score accompanying the film and feels a lot more intimate and personal than many of the recent streetdance or step up films.
But what really made the film connect with my soul was the sequence where Kate finally bites the bullet and thrashes it out with her past in a wonderful set of flashbacks edited wonderfully in to a dance sequence. It's great, even on repeated viewing. I shan't say more or it'll ruin the film. This movie should earn a great following in the dance and internet/social-networking generations and followings and is definitely worth at least two viewings.
It's a very very cheap version of "Save the last dance". Hardly any talking in the film. Slow starting. Have watched it once and wont bother again.
